From the Union Tribune's Top 22 Restaurant's in 2015, here are the 10 spots that I am most excited for!
1. Bracero: Cucina Mexicana de Raiz [The Roots of Mexican Cuisine] (Pictured Above,Top Left)
Opening this March, brought to you by the crown jewel of authentic Baja cuisine and owner of Romesco's and Mission 19, chef Javier Plascencia. This 2 story downtown restaurant and bar will be serving up some delicious modernized Mexican food, spirits, and of course Baja wines. The upstairs portion will be used for fine dining, while the ground floor will provide customers with casual service. If you have been to any of Chef Plascencia's restaurants, you know that he does not disappoint when it comes to authentic flavors and ambiance. His new space will be at 1490 Kettner Blvd. in Little Italy.
2. Coastera (Pictured Above, Bottom Right)
Coastera will be coming this Spring/ Summer 2015, by the Cohn Restaurant Group. According to the Union Tribune, it is the group's "most ambitious concept to date." Coastera will be a floating dining and special events center located on Harbor Island. Can you imagine the thrill of eating fresh Mexican cuisine in a restaurant floating on the ocean? The concept is truly intriguing. Top chef in command will be chef Deborah Scott, who has been collaborating with the Cohn's since 1995. Coastera will be located at 880 Harbor Island Drive.
3. Richard Blais' Casual Concept (Pictured Above, Top Left)
With the name of the restaurant still in the works, Mike Rosen the owner of Juniper and Ivy [a delicious place of food and drink, that I highly recommend], and chef Richard Blais winner of the show Top Chef All-Stars are joining forces to create a casual neighborhood eatery on Kettner Blvd, that will serve up casual, yet delicious bites. The exact location is destined to be 2228 Kettner Blvd.
4. Brian Malarkey Dining Concept (Pictured Above, Bottom Right)
Planned to open late this summer, from celebrity chef Brian Malarkey and his partner Chris Pufffer, are opening up a currently unnamed restaurant in Mixture's former location in Little Italy. The flavor concept will be "wild and organic cuisine with a wood-fire grill, herb garden, and market." Looking forward to this health conscious and fresh menu. I can't wait to see the layout of the place. Another Little Italy location at 2210 Kettner Blvd.
5. Red O (Pictured Above, Top Left)
Coming to La Jolla in 2016, construction will begin this year. Chef Rick Bayless will be turning the current Donovan's steakhouse into an indoor/outdoor Mexican restaurant. The decor in the picture above looks lush and romantic, perhaps the place to be on Valentine's Day next year? This location will be the "L.A. -based chain's fourth location." 4340 La Jolla Village Drive.
6. Cantania (Pictured Above, Bottom Right)
The decor, from the look of floor plan, is very 1960s "feng shui", with a hint of modernity. This Italian coastal restaurant will be opening in mid-March by Whisknladle Hospitality. This indoor and patio restaurant will be taking the place of Jack's in La Jolla. Executive chef Vince Schofield of San Francisco and Whisknladle's executive chef/ partner Ryan Johnston, definitely did their research with this one, by eating their way through Italy's Southern markets, pizzerias, and trattorias. Cantania's address will be 7863 Girard Ave., La Jolla. Can't wait to eat there, it sounds like it's going to be MOLTO DELIZIOSO!
7. Rustic Root (Pictured Above, Top Left)
Prepare yourselves for some PURE American cuisine. Rustic Root will be taking the space of The Marble Room, in our Gaslamp Quarter. According to the co-owners The Knotty Barrel and the RMD Group, Rustic Root will be the "only rooftop dining room in the Gaslamp." The decor looks beautiful and fun, a very neutral background with a pop of color. Quite the earthy vibe, I wonder how beautiful and delicious the food will be. You will soon find Rustic Root at 525 Fifth Avenue in Down Town, San Diego this coming Spring.
8. Water Grill (Pictured Above, Bottom Right)
The Water Grill is said to open this month. This famous L.A. spot is opening it's third location here, in our Gaslamp Quarter. Seasonal fresh seafood including, "whole fish, fine meats, and a raw bar" is what's on the menu of this soon to be, two-story restaurant. Chef and Union Tribune Superdiner, Fabrice Poigim and chef Damon Gordon are the collaborators behind this new downtown spot. The Water Grill San Diego will be located at 615 J St., Gaslamp Quarter.
9. Half Door Brewing Company (Pictured Above, Top Left)
San Diego has become a marvelous birthing ground for local breweries. With the craft beer trend still alive and kicking, Half Door opened in January and has had nothing but rave reviews. With a 4 star average already on Yelp.com, this East Village Irish-style brew house has a very old fashioned feel. The vintage "cottage house" decor, makes you feel like your stepping right into a pub in Dublin. Which goes along perfectly with their slogan, "Where the West Coast Mashes-In with the Emerald Isle." I have yet to go to Half Door but it is definitely on my list. Half Door is located at 903 Island Av., East Village.
10. Bruxie (Pictured Above, Bottom Right)
Breakfast is your first meal of the day, and it should be a scrumptious one. Bruxie, a Belgium waffle-inspired restaurant will open it's second county location this October. This patio cafe downtown location, will be located in San Diego's revamped Horton Park. There will be "waffles stuffed with premi[yum] sweet and savory ingredients." I can't wait to try their Wisconsin frozen custard.
