Take a wish to help underprivileged teens attend prom in a trend-right design and add an emerging fashion design talent competition and what do you get? The Princess Project! A brainchild of Jennifer Gaston and Alma Lyles, this event is now in its 5th year in San Diego.
This year's event was hosted at the SummerSalt Lounge atop the Palomar Hotel, a spectacular rooftop setting for a warm Spring night. Along with Channel 7's Jodi Kodesh, local community entrepreneurs were assembled as judges for the evening's Runway competition.
While the guests perused an amazing selection of raffle & silent suction items (everything from accessories to exotic trips), five FIDM Fashion Design students were given the opportunity to show just how skilled they are at taking an original sketch and bringing it to life using a dress form, fabric, and pins (no sewing here). This all in just one hour! Apparently all contestants came pumped up for the challenge as no sooner had they been introduced and their sketches placed on easels, they went quickly to work on their versions of the 'perfect prom dress'.

Pink and pastel were the theme colors of the evening's dress designs with lace and netting adding a textural interest. As it was a competition, the local celebrity judges voted Cecilia Gonzalez Runner-Up and Shailja (we all know her as Shalu) the winner...honestly all participants did an amazing job in the time allotted. Shalu is from India and has never attended a prom although one would never guess that to look at her beautiful pink satin & tulle design. All the completed designs had a very storytale, romantic feeling to them...any high schooler would feel just like a Princess wearing one.
